If you and Dixie would like to borrow a couple let me know-the Crooked Spoon Memorial Library and Beach Bar is open for business!

One other title that somehow escaped from the list and is highly recommended for vessel organization and voyaging tips is The Voyaging Handbook by Beth Leonard. I would put it at the top of the General Cruising and Voyaging list.

Ted, thanks for the book list. I love to read and enjoy sailing books tremendously. I'll have to get some of these books.

One of the student skippers in 214 asked for further resources dealing with voyaging in general and vessel organization specifically. Here are my favorites. If you are bitten by the bug I would suggest you start by looking into the personal accounts of the voyagers to start with to get a feel for what its like out there and to bolster your ambitions. Many people delve into the nitty gritty how-to details first and lose sight of the ultimate goal-get out there and see the world! Next I would suggest the US entire Sailing certification series (very good groundwork is laid and goes on to more ambitious topic-highly recommended!), and then go on to the the more nuts and bolts kinds of stuff regarding planning and organizing and other mores specialized topics.

Personal Voyaging Accounts:

Dove by Robin Graham (a bit dated in terms of details, but still a great story)
Following Seas by Beth Leonard
Just Cruising by my good friend Liza Copland
Sailing Promise by Alayne Main
Maiden Voyage by Tania Aebi
Coming About: A Family Passage at Sea by Susan Hitchcock
Mahina Tiare and Log of the Mahina, both by my good friend John Neal
First Time Around by Jamie Bryson
Sail Away, edited by Lena Lencek and Gideon Bosker

Introduction to Sailing and Voyaging Details:

US Sailing Basic Keelboat
US Sailing Basic Cruising
US Sailing Bareboat Cruising
US Sailing Navigation
US Sailing Passagemaking

Provisioning and Galley Organization:

The Essential Galley Companion by my good friend Amanda Swan-Neal
Care and Feeding of the Offshore Crew by Lin Pardey

General Cruising and Voyaging:

Handbook of Offshore Cruising by Jim Howard
Practical Seamanship and Offshore Cruising Encyclopedia, both by Steve Dashew
Wold Cruising Essentials and World Cruising Handbook, both by Jimmy Cornell
The Cruising Woman's Advisor by Diana Jessie
The Cruising Life by Jim Trefethen-how to plan and execute your escape into cruising

Weather:

Weather Predicting Simplified by my good friend Michael Carr-everyone should have a copy
Understanding Weatherfax by Mike Harris

General References for all things Nautical:

American Practical Navigator-navigation reference
Dutton's Piloting-navigation reference
Annapolis Book of Seamanship-everyone should have a copy
Chapman Piloting and Seamanship-everhone should have a copy of this too

Sail Trim and Rigging:

Looking at Sails by Bruce Banks and Dick Kenny-out of print, but worth trying to find using the used book search engines. Very visual and logical.
The Rigger's Apprentice by Brian Toss-encyclopedic but extremely valuable reference.

Radios and Communication:

Cruiser's Radio Guide by Roger Krautkremer-geared towards voyaging and using Marine SSB and ham radios for weather, nets, etc,.
A Boater's Guide to VHF by Sue Fletcher-an in depth treatment of the correct useage of VHF radios.

Electrical and Mechanical Topics:

Living on 12 Volts and Wiring 12 Volts both by David Smead and Rith Ishihara-excellent introduction to all things electrical aboard a vessel
Boat Owner's Mechanical and Electrical Manual by Nigel Calder-everyone should have a copy
Diesel Engines by Leo Block

Local Cruising Guides:

The Cruising Guide to Central and Southern California by Brian Fagan
Boating and Diving Catalina Island by Bruce Wicklund

Some great cruising guides to whet your appetite for far off lands:

Landfalls of Paradise by Earl Hinz
On and Off the Beaten Path by Stephen Pavlidis-cruising guide to central and south Bahamas
