I have noticed that a red slimy substance grows in many sailboat bilges. I don't think I've ever seen it in a powerboat bilge. Perhaps that means I should dump more oil into my bilge. I used to think it was algae until I remembered that algae requires light for photosynthesis. So now I think its bacteria. Of course, lately I think any slimy coating is a bacterial mat. This crud can get so bad it actually clogs up bilge pumps. Perhaps one of our marine biologists could enlighten us on the nature of the substance. Even better would be to identify a method to inhibit its growth with something that would not simultaneously corrode the keel bolts. |
