Can the "U.S. Sailing Cruising Certification" book be used as a substitute instead of the "Colgate book"? If not, can you please bring an extra Colgate book for me on the next meeting so I can purchase it from you? [r] Answer: Yes, but there are some errors in it as I recall. We can talk about them. [r]??

From Susie Csontos; I just registered for MST 289 today (July 19). I've missed the info meeting, but I've learned about the discussion board and have looked at the class syllabus-- I've attached my completed questionnaire. I do have a question about finding the books that we'll be using for class. The Saddleback website lists no textbooks required for the class, so I'm guessing they are not available through the bookstore. I've found Colgate's "Basic Sailing" at BoatUS.com, but I can't find Colgate's "Cruising" anywhere (online). Could you provide the ISBN for the book or suggest where I can find a copy? Also, I would like to scuba dive while at the Channel Islands if that's possible. I don't know any of the students going on the trip-- so I don't have a dive buddy (maybe I'll find one at the July 30 meeting?). And would it be possible to get an air fill so that I could dive more than once? Maybe I could get an air fill from one of the scuba boats in the area if they're around? Answer: The Colgate books may be available at the bookstore; also I have them available for $20/pair tax incl. Let me know if you want to get them before the first class. Regarding SCUBA, no, there is no opportunity for refills of air but the snorkeling is great!!

How much are the books if we want to purchase them? When will you have them avialible to purchase? Will you have them in the first class? Answer: They are $20 for a pair of 2 books. $18 something plus tax = $20. They will be available first class or sooner if you are sailing tomorrow. |

DO WE NEED TO PURCHASE THE BOOK FOR THIS CLASS? Answer: No book is required but the Colgate books are recommended. You can get them in class if you wish. I will have samples available. |

QUESTION ABOUT SLEEPING BAGS Crew normally sleep in sleeping bags; that's the easiest way to do it, altho sheet and blanket will work. We will sleep on board the boat [unless you want to go ashore and sleep with the cute little mice that are indigenous to the Channel Islands] |

International time avoids confusion. [It's not just military] Think of it as a 24 hour clock; 12 noon is followed by 1300. In military time it would be 1300 hours. That's 1 plus 12. 5 pm would be 1700; that's 5 plus 12. So for your first quiz; what's 1900? |

Mark, While I have no problem using International Time, one question has escaped answer. When spoken, the time for say 1:00pm is usually "thirteen-hundred hours." For 10:00am (1000) and 8:00pm (2000), what is the correct way? Answer: This probably depends on where you are and what language is spoken. I only know the Army says "hours" and Navy and Marines don't. |

Where do we park our cars for the weekend of the cruise? Answer: There is parking at both the Aventura docks and the Youth and Group docks. [These are both along the north side of the West Basin] |

This militay time is really bugging me! Can you set the record straight with the time for the two class meetings...and the TIME we meet for the cruise. IN NORMAL TIME. (ex 1:00 - 2:00) Thank you. Dear Anonymous; This is a class; the language of the class is the language of seafarers. You have been instructed on how to read 24 hour time without using algebra [it's perfectly ok to use your fingers and toes if necessary]. So therefore the answer is, no, you must learn how to read and use it or you will not be in the right place at the right time. Thanks for bringing this to my attention; I will be careful not use 12 hour time again. :-) Mark |
