There is a new technology developing called GIS.
Imagine you can call up a map [chart] of the ocean and it is able to show you an almost infinite amount of information about any place on that map you choose. It might be historical, statistical, real time; perhaps water temperatures, wind/sea conditions, what animals or plants are found there; and you would access these overlays of information, called layers, similarly to the way you do when you "google earth" now [if you haven't yet, you should].
Since this technology will play such a large role in an entire spectrum of career applications, Saddleback is exploiting training opportunities beginning with a class this semester GIS 110. Unfortunately it conflicts with the AdvCruising class, but I am enrolling to get what I can out of it, and I recommend it to anyone interested in navigation and mapping of the oceans. Later I will be developing a class in marine applications using the data and facilities of the Ocean Institute in Dana Point.
