MST 215 Student Skippers!!! Final reminder on what I need from you at the next class meeting on May 13. John - I have it all, thanks. Glynda - need your second midterm paper, final paper, and could you please re-send crew evaluations from the first cruise. Tom - need your second midterm paper and final paper. Kevin - need your final paper. Saul - need final paper. Cheree - need your first midterm paper, your second midterm paper, your final paper, and crew evaluations from the second cruise. You may turn these in to me prior to class via email to marc@santasailing.com, so that I receive them by 2000 on May 13. Word, html, and pdf files are fine (make sure you have a backup copy). If you think you might have problems with your email server resulting in a later delivery to me, please just print it out and bring it to class on May 13, and deliver it to Mark Howe during class. Please keep in mind the burden of delivery is yours - if I do not have it by then, I will not score it. Or, you can do the usual thing by turning in hard copy of your papers to Mark Howe at the final class meeting. Thanks again, Marc |

MST 215 Student Skippers!!! Here is what I need as of this writing for your grade, no later than the next class meeting, May 13: John - need your final paper. Got it, thanks Glynda - need your second midterm paper, final paper, and could you please re-send crew evaluations from the first cruise. Tom - need your second midterm paper and final paper. Kevin - need your final paper.I have rec'd your 2nd midterm, thanks Saul - need your second midterm paper got it, thanks and final paper. Cheree - need your first midterm paper, your second midterm paper, your final paper, and crew evaluations from the second cruise. How to get these items to me: 1. Send via email to marc@santasailing.com, so that I receive them by 2000 on May 13. Word, html, and pdf files are fine (make sure you have a backup copy). If you think you might have problems with your email server resulting in a later delivery to me, please just print it out and bring it to class on May 13, and deliver it to Mark Howe during class. If I do not have it by then, I will not score it. 2. Deliver printed copy of what you need for your grade to Mark Howe on May 13 during class. I should add that first and second midterms and crew evaluations are now overdue, and your grades will reflect this according to the date received - to the extent you get these to me before May 13, your grade will be less severely impacted. I will be on yet another cruise that departs out of Newport on the 13th, and so I will not see you there the evening that all this is due. Just the same, I want to thank you for being a valuable part of the experience and ask you to do this: come back for the Summer MST 289 class, and for the Fall MST 214A class. Come back and apply what you've learned, learn more, and pass your knowledge along to others who want it - there are few things more worthwhile than that! See you on the water! |

Each boat has pre and post cruise reports to be filled out. The Scout boats have a blue folder for these. They should be completed so that the next user knows what has gone on before and can be prepared. Fuel level is important; also problems with the boat. It appears that at least one crew did not do their post cruise report. Wouldn't it be nice to know stuff like that when you are checking out a boat? |

Excerpts from the writings of Cheree; The theory behind "Sea Scout" style is this: once we hit the docks, there is NO WAY you are going to be able to keep the kids from running around and not coming back to the boat to clean up. So, we have the kids do it all before we hit the docks, and we have them pack up everything into bags and loaded into the V-berth for easy, assembly-style unloading. After my crew took their test, I explained what I wanted to happen (pack everything, then clean) And, to make everyone more ambitious for cleaning - I took the ever present dreadful question off everyone's mind - "who's gonna have to clean the head?".....by doing it myself while they were taking their test. By doing so, this seem to put everyone in a cheerful mood, they were all happy to pack and clean - with no delay or complaints, or anything. I've learned something from past cruises with Larry Barley and Bucky Bailey, and that is, if you, the skipper, clean the head, and lead by example, others will cheerfully follow. AND, everyone will be relieved that they were not stuck with the "dreadful" job of having to clean the head. And pyscologically - although my crew might not admit it - I know this lifted a huge burden off the subconscience of their minds. It worked like a "CHARM"!!!! Marc even complimented me for the organization of my crew. Everything was done - and we even had time to practice 4 MOB drills before turning into the harbor entrance. Once back at the docks, we only had two chores to do: clean and disinfect the frig, and hose the outside of the boat. It was simple and easy and everyone left with a smile on their face. This made all the difference!!! My comments; I kept the groceries hostage and then after all the work was done, we had a game about grabbing leftover groceries to take home. Nobody could leave early. I divided up the boat for cleaning with each watch responsible for a section. Most crews would get most of their section done before we got to the dock. The galley took the most time but could be done under way. Topsides was the last because the boat needed to be unloaded before hosing commenced. Nobody could leave until the boat passed inspection so at that point everybody helped out a little. The head, surprisingly, was quick and simple. Mostly done with a shower nozzle and hot water washing away the smell [if any; usually it wasn't all that bad]. This depended a lot on how nice the head was kept during the cruise. It is said, a leader shouldn't assign a job he wouldn't be willing to do himself. That said, if you are doing the job, you can't be doing your own job of supervising, but maybe in the interests of morale you can jump in at opportune moments and "lead by example". By doing the head while the crew was doing exams is an opportune moment. As long as it doesn't take your attention away from the big picture. Very important! |

Student Skippers - Papers and Crew Evaluations Due From this last cruise, I'm sure there will be no shortage of subject matter. Please present your papers at the next class and consider the following criteria on which your paper will be graded: Completion of subject matter: 1. Overall crew organization 2. Leadership problems 3. Leadership successes 4. Comparison to other situations outside this class. 5. Contemplate your relationship to the boat captain. Insight What did you learn, and what would you do differently? Creativity Aside from the standard best practices of a skipper, what new ideas can you bring forward that would have made the cruise better, safer, faster, and more enjoyable (from a learning perspective) for the next cruise you are on? John and Glynda, please complete the same from your unique perspectives as "lame duck" skippers. You did not have to lead the cruise, but you were able to participate and see it all unfold. Second, please present your crew evaluations along the guidelines presented for the last cruise: On a scale of 1 - 10 with ten being best, rate each crewmember's performance in the following areas: 1. Applies knowledge from class room lectures to effectively handle practical situations that arise on the cruise. 2. Completes assigned tasks. 3. Takes initiative - anticipates problems and issues and takes positive action early in order to: a.) prevent problems; b.) make sailing and anchoring maneuvers more safe and efficient; c.) generally improve safety and comfort; d.) keep the boat shipshape. 4. Takes responsibility for learning on his/her own, and contributes to the accomplishment of the overall learning objectives for the cruise. Please send these confidentiaql evaluations to me at hughston@cox.net. I will not be at the next class but I am sure that Mark Howe will be eager to hear, and to read all of it. Marc |

Sloop Crew; There's no reason for you to park at the youth facility. I'll arrange for all of you to park in the lot next to the Sloop. I'll be standing at the gate at 1900 to let you in. If anybody comes early, just call me on my cell and I'll come get you. 8744819 Take Golden Lantern until it dead ends by resturants. Follow the turn to the left and then pull into the first gated parking lot to your right. |

Student Skippers: I will have parking permits that are good for the area near the DP Youth & Group facility, where the Scout boats are, for you at the docks Thursday evening. Tom, please check with Susie re parking for the area where her boat is. I think the challenge is just getting in to the gated area, and then you're OK. Check with her though. I will also have harnesses. Please side tie at the Scout dock no later than 2045 and I will give you what you need. Of course, earlier is better. Cheree, please organize activities on Fugga Oui so that we can arrive at the Scout docks approx. 2030. |

The syllabus precruise checklists are on pgs. 11 & 12; the general checklist is the main overall one although the others are important too. Marc gave you the one Kevin posted, right? BTW I was able to pull up the pdf file easily, without disabling my norton firewall even!! |

Mark or Marc, Will you have parking permits avaible for our crew? If not where can I pick them up. I need 5 for Sloop. Also I need to borrow 2 harnesses. Will they be at the docks? Is it possible to post the pre-cruise check list? I was told it was in the class syllabus but it's not. The one on page 32 does not look like the one Susie says I need. Thanks Tom G. |

Student Skippers, As I prepare for a trip that will not bring me back to Dana Point until this coming Wednesday evening, April 13, I see that I will not make the posts on this board that would have provided information you wanted. Instead, I will get these things to you the evening of our departure, including: Itinerary, Boat checklists, log sheets. Mark Howe will be out of town too during this time. I will not have access to email, but I should be able to check voice mail periodically, so call me if you have questions or concerns at 949-939-8123. |

Skippers, the west wind we have today is kicking up the kind of swell we may have on our upcoming trip. The image below is from a NWS page at this address: http://cdip.ucsd.edu/?nav=recent&sub=nowcast&xitem=socal_now. I thought you would find it interesting to see how the swell declines in the lee of Catalina, and the other islands.
Next, when there are strong winds out of the west, it's interesting to see where it's nasty, and where it's nicer. Clockwise from the upper left, you can see that at 1700 today, highest winds were concentrated at San Miguel, Anacapa, and Santa Barbara Island. The link to these images is: http://www.nawcwpns.navy.mil/~weather/mugu/mesodata/analysis.html. Scroll down for the Offshore Surface Winds.

Student Skippers: Need Your Crew Evaluations As you may know, 20% of the grade for MST 214 students - your crew - is based on their participation on the cruise. I need your help in completing their evaluations for the last cruise, so I'll be calling and emailing to get them. Here's how I'd like you to rate each of your crew: On a scale of 1 - 10 with ten being best, rate each crewmember's performance in the following areas: 1. Please use these same areas to rate the performance of your crew on the upcoming cruise as well. If you have additional thoughts about performance issues not covered by these areas, I'll take those into consideration too. Thanks! |

Charles, I'm the last to know some of these things. I of course thought that because the spin halyard was not there when you boarded, that this was the way the boat was to be left. So I'm glad it is back on! Marc |

Boat Rigging Notes - Post Cruise: On Pilgrimage, we unrigged the inner forestay and the reefline for the main. Charles and Saul, did you unrig the spin halyard from La Mouette, and otherwise return the boat to the rigging condition it was in when you stepped aboard? John and Kevin, same for Half Moon, though I'm not sure you changed anything. In any event, our obligation is to return the Scout boats to the same condition in which we picked them up. Please let me know if we need to do anything further to fulfill that obligation. Thanks! |

IMPORTANT NOTES FOR NEXT CLASS MEETING 2/25/05 1. Please have all your provisioning done by Thursday, 2/24/05. Then Friday evening, after the lecture, all you need to do is load. 2. There will be a lecture beginning at 5:30 with a quiz. Please attend - it will be important for doing well on the first midterm which, will be conducted on the cruise. 3. If you follow this recommendation you will then enable your crewmates to do well on their midterms, you'll have Friday after class to get the last minute things you forgot, and Sat. morning before departure will be relaxed. 4. In other words, it will reflect poorly on your leadership skills if you put everything off and force your crew to skip the lecture so that they can do all the provisioning Friday night. Is that a strong enough hint? |

Fueling the boats: If your boat needs fuel, please fuel prior to the departure date. Jon Coltrane, Mark, and me are among those on the list of SBCC signers at the fuel dock. Charles and Saul, why don't you coordinate with me to sign for your fuel if you need it. Glynda, let me know when you want to go. SBCC has no reimbursement mechanism if you pay for the fuel yourself. So, if you don't want to pay for the fuel yourself, you must have the correct person sign on the SBCC account at the fuel dock. |

Re: ATON In recent years I have been unable to see a difference between the red and green [lighted] bouys. To me they look like the same bouy; just painted a different color. I could go take a photo of each one and compare them to see if one has more sloping sides than the other but it sure doesn't look like it. Anybody know what the difference is if any? Sure would save money not having to make two kinds. Most students remember the bouys by visualizing a familiar harbor entrance or channel and what colors and numbers are where. You can point that out as you are leaving the harbor. If you come across a solitary red bouy that has letters on it rather than just numbers, be sure you know what that means. |

MST 215 Student Skippers, you might find this useful as a teaching aid for MST 214 students in regard to Aids To Navigation. Some of this will be important for their tests. When you are returning from seaward, remember that it's "red, right, returning." And when leaving the harbor, it is the opposite. Occasionally though, when on the water, you will find a single ATON (aid(s) to navigation) and will need to know to which side the channel lies, or to which side you should leave the ATON in order to progress safely. Use the following to help remember the characteristics of lateral ATON: COGS, TERN Returning from seaward, ATON marking the left side of the channel are COGS. Returning from seaward, ATON marking the right hand side of the channel are TERN. COGS C can (if it's a buoy - straight sides, flat top) O odd number G green S square (day mark) TERN T triangle (day mark) E even number R red N nun (if it's a buoy - can with a conical top) So here's the idea: You're approaching the Newport Harbor entrance in a pea soup fog, and you get close enough to one of the jetties that you can just make out a triangular day mark with waves crashing below it. Which side is the harbor entrance on? (if you're wrong, you fetch up on the Corona del Mar beach - but that's better than surfing in on the nasty old "Wedge" on the other side. Let me know if this helps, or if you have more questions. |

MST 215 Campell's Sloop issues for Feb. 11 Class Meeting: Susie Campbell, owner and boat captain for Campbell's Sloop will not be able to attend the Feb. 11 class meeting where the bulk of the precruise planning and organization will take place. So at that class meeting I will work primarily with the Sloop skipper and crew, and Larry Barley will work primarily with Pilgrimage skipper and crew. To get more acquainted with Campbell's Sloop and Susie prior to the cruise, Susie offers the following: "I would be more than happy to meet with John (my student skipper of the first cruise) at anytime M-W-F up until 4:30 pm or any Sunday. I could take him and the crew out sailing on the Sloop, so that they can all become familiar with the boat and me, before the trip. I don’t know John or have his e-mail address. Maybe you could pass this on to him and the two of us could work things out." John, you can reach Susie by email at sailorsusie@cox.net and coordinate from there. |

Change in Student Skipper assignment: On Campbells Sloop, John, could you lead the first trip instead of Cheree? Please let me know if not. The reason is, Cheree will miss the next class, and the opportunity to begin working with crew. So Cheree, your assignment will be to lead the second cruise. |

Student Skipper Teams and Boat Assignments The current plan is to use 4 boats: Campbell's Sloop, a Catalina 34; Pilgrimage, a Pearson 365; Half Moon, an Ericson 28; and La Mouette, an Islander 28. We have 6 sudent skippers and 4 boats, so some of you will be working in teams. As we discussed in class, for those of you in teams, one will lead the first trip, and one will lead the second trip. Here are the assignments for the first trip: Pilgrimage - Tom and Glynda. Glynda leads the first trip (Tom will be absent). Boat captain: Marc, with Larry. Campbell's Sloop - John and Cheree. Cheree leads the first trip. Boat captain: Susie. Halfmoon - Kevin. Boat captain: Jonathan La Mouette - Saul. Boat captain: Charles I'll work on crew assignments after the questionaires are returned. |

By the way, John, Thom, and Saul, you guys should register yourselves on this discussion board and set your preferences to automatically recieve posts from this topic. That way, you'll be better able to organize your boat and crew for the trips via the discussion board. You'll also be able to automatically receive any other communications regarding the class from either Mark or me. |
