MST 289 Cruise Pilgrimage and Sea Lark Update I got this from Jeff Johnson tonight. Tony Clement and Charles Kepford, please read up! Just keeping you informed of some minor boat issues. Bucky is away on Long Cruise so no fixes will be occurring for these problems (or any other problems) before your cruise. Pilgrimage.... Foot pump for sink appears to have failed. Feel free to try and fix it if you like. Electric pressure pump is working fine. Cable for Radar has come off (on the mast). Apparently someone a few weeks back somehow ripped it from it's supports and now the cable has been ripped off from the mast Radar equipment. Per instruction from Bucky we affixed the cable to the cable steps to prevent it from coming apart further or get tangled in lines. None-the-less some care with the cable is advisable to prevent any further damage. RADAR is inoperative.... DO NOT ACTIVATE the radar until the wiring can be properly reattached. I did need to add oil although it does not seem to be eating oil. Engine is working perfectly. The head pump housing seems cracked a bit and there is some water (clean) which is squirting out a bit. The head seems fully functional although it is somewhat wet in the head due to the water squirting around a bit from the pump housing. The macerator pumping / valving and sight glass (David Sheriff signature installation) continues to work flawlessly with a crystal clear view of all waste being pumped out. The full red light indicator was also still in perfect operating order. I will be taking out Pilgrimage again this w/e so I may have some more info to pass on to you later. Needless to say the boat will be particularly clean and the tank very fresh as I always kindly pump, rinse and put in the magic green stuff and that wonderful head lube. Someone had put coleman white gas fuel into the stove a few weeks ago. This was very dangerous and the fuel has been removed. We have put alcohol in and used the stove for many hours now and it is working fine. A gallon of stove alcohol is now about $30 a gallon but is the ONLY fuel which can be used in this stove. Please make sure your students go to West Marine and purchase the correct product. Depending on how much and what is being cooked (more for baking!). A gallon and a quart (in reserve) will probably be enough alcohol for your trip. Sea Lark.... When I was checking out the boat today the bathroom knob was on the floor. I picked up the pieces and was able to get it back together and fully functional using the second smallest stainless steel hex key in the boat's tool kit. Apparently this is a recurring problem so be prepared to fix again should it come loose. I think I have it real tight so hopefully it will stay together during your trip. Some of the lines (especially the jib sheets) are worn but they have been for quite awhile. Someday need to be replaced but due to being very oversized probably are OK for awhile longer. Please remind your skippers and students be careful with the boats and their equipment. As you know, the boats have been very well labeled and the equipment is situated better than ever. Make sure engine temperature, oil pressure, and batteries are properly monitored. Operating instructions are to be carefully monitored. Please do not operate the engines at excessive rpms as this has caused damage before and we would like to keep the boats operational w/o need of costly and time consuming repairs. Have fun! I'll be at Emerald Bay BSA camp with Dirt scouts getting wet at times while you are out on your cruise. |

MST 289 Update For those who wanted to add this class after our meeting on 7/18/08: The APCs I issued had an expiration date of 7/21/08, and I have been unable to make the system allow me to change that date. As result, several of you who wanted to add are unable to add this class. I regret that you cannot add and find that I can do nothing to allow you to add now. Please accept my apology. You should consider enrolling in MST 214A, Intermediate Ocean Sailing in the Fall session. And then of course there is MST 214B and 215 in the Spring of '09. I hope to see you then! Marc |

MST 289 Enrollment Details I issued addtitional APCs for those who came to the meeting and wanted to add. Expected enrollment, if all who received APCs register, is 44. No more APCs will be issued and those of you who have them but did not register and did not come to class, I'm sorry but we are full! This is the largest class ever and I think we will have some fun with the extra boats and all the new people being introduced to the curriculum. Another new adventure begins. Marc |

MST 289 Summer Class and Cruise Details At this moment, enrollment is 35, and there are at least 7 more spaces available. I have made arrangements for a total of 7 boats. 4 will depart from Dana Point, 2 from Long Beach, and 1 from San Pedro (if we get the enrollment). Apparently not all on the initial wait-list will go, so let’s get that 7th boat filled. Tell your friends and neighbors we can take them – even if the Saddleback Schedule says “Full.” They need to register as a student at Saddleback, and then show up at the first meeting, July 11, 7:00 PM at Saddleback College in the ATAS building, room 116. I will hand out APCs (Add Permit Codes) at that time. Have people contact me directly if they want to take the class and can make the trip but cannot make the July 11 meeting. marc@santanasailing.com 949-939-8123. It’s great to see the class grow to this size. Let’s get that 7th boat filled! Boat Captains we have lined up include, in no particular order: Toni Rawlins Larry Barley Charles Kepford John Fellner Tony Clement Marc Hughston David Sheriff See you Friday evening at Saddleback! MST 289 Summer Class update Wow! At this moment I have enrollment of 30 and a waiting list of 10. Just wanted to let you all know that I am exploring the options to see how many more boats and skippers I can get so I know how many I can add. There is usually a little turmoil with adds and drops, as occasionally people don't read the schedule, don't realize they'll be in close quarters with others on a small boat, and so on. I hope to have an answer by this coming Friday May 30 about allowing adds for the first 10 on the wait list, and my hope is that you will all be able to add. Wait list at this point includes (in no particular order): AJ Starsiak Lisa Taylor Frank Cox Jeannine Urban Karen Mayer Teresa Fry Jeff Gravett Reggie Acosta Chris Pugh Kaori Kobayashi - she's not sure just yet. All of you on the above list have priority having just completed MST 214B, along with 2 who are significant others. I'll keep you posted right here. Marc |
