I mentioned the new Airmar rate compass in class last night as an example of new gyro technology bringing the price down. The product is not yet shown on their website, but it is part of the weather station they have developed. In order to compute true wind you have to know your heading. Hence you need a rate compass.

Airmar weather station

At the recent NMEA show they were demonstrating against a Simrad rate compass and looked much more immune to roll effects. Now you can always count on one thing in this world: whenever a manufacturer makes a dramatic head-to-head test against a competitor it will pick an easy competitor to beat. The new device may be good, but they are slanting the results by picking the opponent.

I was unaware that Maretron has had a a rate stabilized NMEA 2000 / 0183 compass out for at least a year. It lists for $740. The Simrad compass has been out for years (I was not able to confirm the model number) and carries a significantly higher list price.

All of this begs the question, of course, as to who actually designed and manufactures the compasses. In the case of traditional fluxgates, we have seen that Autonnic Research actually makes the compasses that sell under several different brands. When it comes to actually figuring out which compass will perform better, you need to know what is behind the plastic shell.

The first revision to "Precisely What the Words Mean in MST-218" as of September 20, 2008. In addition to adding roughly a dozen terms, the definitions of terms used in describing autopilots have been cleaned up, most notably some confusion on "track." Some references from Dutton have been incorporated where they are simpler, more concise and better representative of actual current usage.

GPS class presentation handouts

loran upgrade presentation by Cpt. Curtis Dubay, USCG The good Captain makes the common mistake of having so much information on one of his slides that it is illegible compared to the rest of them. Consequently, this is at full resolution.

a 2004 presentation by Locus, Inc, a manufacturer of enhanced Loran equipment

the class presentation on Loran You would think that, with the other two loran presentations by very high level officials in the loran world, it is presumptuous of me to create yet another loran presentation to deliver in class. Obviously, I don't think so. Sorry Adobe does such a crappy job of reducing the crappier slides in my presentation. And those of you who were in class might remember that I paused the show to demonstrate how TD lines intersect by using multiple transparencies on an overhead projector.

My theory of presentations is that the presenter should not read the slide to the audience, but should independently talk about what is on the slide. Hence, looking at my slides when I really meet my expectations gives a very incomplete picture of the live event.
