For hundreds of years, rope mats were standard equipment on sailing vessels and well-kept yachts. They were primarily used to prevent chafing or to give better footing at the helm or on the gangway. While out at sea for weeks at a time, able seamen used their extensive knot knowledge to make beautiful rope mats. Recently, however, the art has been neglected by boaters and is rarely seen. Come rediscover the lost art of making a beautiful rope mat for your home, boat, or as a gift. Bring 100 feet of braided rope (3/8”, 1/2”, or 75 feet of 5/8” diameter) to the next WORSA (Women's Ocean Sailing Association) meeting, Wednesday, November 12, 7 p.m., at the Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club in Corona del Mar. Captain Barb Merriman will get you well on your way to completing the mat. This is a great way to recycle old line. You can purchase inexpensive bundled, precut braided rope in a variety of bright colors (green, yellow, purple, blue) at Home Depot. Before the meeting, uncoil the rope and run it through your hands several times from end to end. This will release the kinks and make it easier to braid. Dress comfortably because you may end up sitting on the floor. Barb presented this seminar a few years ago for WORSA and it was really fun! There is no charge for this event.
