The crew who participated on both voyages received some invaluable experience. Truly, many sailors will simply remain dockside at the hint of a small craft advisory. I commend all of you for believing in the leadership aboard your vessels to keep you safe, and get you to your destination (well almost). This was an excellent semester of sailing that will be difficult to replicate. You were awesome!!! Come on Mark maybe 2 extra points???

Both cruises this semester were an extra challenge from the norm--and I really salute all those brave souls that went on them. There should be some extra credit for those that took both cruises..just my opinion...

The Final Exam had a total of 196pts possible. 10 took the exam. The curve came out 85% A, 70% B, 55% C.
There were 2 As, 4 Bs & 4 Cs.

The most missed true/false questions were:
#s 4, 12, 24, 47 at least half of you missed it.
#s 3, 11, 21, 25, 32 almost half of you missed it [4].
The most missed multiple choice:
#s 3, 32 nobody got it all.
#s 9, 22, 31 only 2 of you got it.
# 27 only 3 of you got both.

The final grade for 214b is 40% midterm, 20% cruise [10 each] and 40% final exam.
It is tentatively looking like 6 As, 1 B, 2 Cs, 1 D, 2 Fs.
This is subject to change.

Susie---

We would have been in trouble in Sealark--would have had to turn into Catalina a lot sooner--and would have been bounced around a lot. We got back to DP around 4:30PM and went to the fuel dock. Mariner got in an hour earlier and Rhapsody was ahead of us a bit as well.

Brian, Good thing you didn't take Sea Lark on that trip! I was thinking of all of you all week-end long. Don and I sailed out to look for you on Sunday. We anchored off Main Beach in LAguna for about an hour and then sailed home in record time. You must have come in just before us. Glad you're all home safe.

Pilgrimage battled on into the wind until almost 4AM--windspeed kicked up noticably after 2AM--we were reporting GPS speed--4-5 knots--but crew indicated we were viewing the red beacon (I believe Long Point on the hill)not moving position for over an hour---course plot should be interesting--were we traveling sideways? When we made our course change--John F dropped the main in sloppy seas with high winds -teathered onto mast -- we had a 2 hour (8.5 nm) course to Avalon---with whitecapped rollers coming from our beam--good thing we had a heavy boat with a good keel--motor boat would not have been able to do that course--due to rolling action and swell/windchop from multiple angles. We arrive at mooring in Avalon--last in--at 6AM. What a night!.

From Rhapsody's perspective I think the two main issues were an extremely confused sea, making the motion very jerky and unpredictable, which in turn contributed to varying degrees of motion sickness in a some of our crew at one time or another, leading to reduced crew capacity in an already underhanded vessel. The second is due to the increasing seas and wind, which was coming directly from our heading, our VMG was decreasing, less than 3.5 knots at the time. The combination of the two led us to seek shelter at our planned alternate destination, as our ETA was stretching out into the afternoon and we didn't have the depth of crew that could handle the conditions for that period of time, and secondly but probably the most important consideration crew comfort - whose idea was this anyway? :-)

Heard you had another exciting cruise!!

"Another wild ride Thursday night. 25kt winds, swells at 5-7 at 8 second intervals. Pitch black, most everyone sick, exhausted and very wet! By 0200 we were making less than 1kt headway. Decided to get shelter in Avalon, arrived 0400. Reported winds up to 55kts at Santa Barbara Island. Stayed another night in Avalon then sailed to Emerald for the 3rd night. But all in all a great trip with lots of learning."

Glad to hear things are going so well. This is the kind of priceless experience you just can't get in any other way!! Looking forward to hearing about it Monday. Get your best 'sea stories' ready.

You may be wondering about the midterm. I never waste a piece of paper so I used the blank side of 'previously used' paper for the midterm. The computer apparently didn't figure that out. Sorry. The second page might show up on the final. In the meantime, you have a head start on the Weather class next fall.

I will be with you in spirit on this trip. I enjoyed these trips immensely. The sea still has me in it's emotional grip and I look forward to seeing you on the water in the future.

The expert gps with cad/dxf like still works. The prices have gone up though. Normal prices $199.95, Saddleback is given a $99.95 discount. You end up paying $100.00 for a great easy to use program.

I mentioned I had a code for purchase of ExpertGPS by Saddleback students.
This is what I got from Dan Foster a few years ago and I don't know if it will still work, but it is a very good deal I think.
Let me know what you find out.

Give your students the following URL:
http://www.expertgps.com/purchase.asp?coupon=saddleback

They should see "Coupon Entered" in red at the top.
Click the Buy Now button next to Purchase ExpertGPS Pro with GIS and
CAD/DXF, and they'll get the software for $50, rather than $149.95
The coupon code isn't stored in a shopping cart - they have to follow
that URL immediately before purchasing. The discount is only valid on
the ExpertGPS Pro with GIS and CAD version, which is what you're using
in class.
