I would be up for a longer day Sunday, but I would be concerned about crew fatigue after 4-5 hours underway. Three of the four crew members on Rhapsody have little to no ocean experience and I want to make their first cruise an enjoyable one. My experience is that if you try to go for more than 4-6 hours (depending on swells and how much actual sailing is done) even with a formal watch rotation the majority of the crew crashes down below leaving one or two to manage the boat the rest of the cruise, particularly if there is no sun or wind protection in the cockpit as is the case with Rhapsody and Sea Lark. RE: Moorings, my preference would be to anchor both nights and maybe practice picking up a mooring during the day somewhere rather than spending the night on one. Has anyone had experience anchoring in the coves West of Catalina Harbor? | ||

Depending on fleet speed--assume we are looking at 6-7 hour crossing--depending on whether we sail portion, etc. I think Willow or other options in that general area is good for first night--I expect a full day on Saturday--8AM to 4PM--with anchoring, etc. Sunday---expect 8am-4pm again--we could do lunch at Little Harbor--mooring at Cat Harbor--go for afternoon sail out of Cat Harbor--if the wind is blowing. AS far as staying on the "inside" and going up to Emerald, etc---let's see what the wind/weather are like-- | ||

Gents, I would like to continue the route planning discussions started last session. My thoughts: 1. Suggest an easy first leg to minimize crew fatigue on what may be their first trip across the channel. To me this means a maximum leg of 4-6 hours. This will also leave time on the water after our arrival if conditions warrant as was discussed in the last meeting. Thinking of Whites, Toyon or Willow. 2. Suggest an interesting destination such as Emerald or Little Harbor for the second night, but again would not go over 4-6 hours duration. 3. Third day would be a nice broad reach back home. Comments anyone? |
