At the class last night I commented about how reading about sail trim is best combined with trying it. Just the same, see if this article that ends with the concept of shifting gears, published in "Speed and Smarts" newsletter by David Dellenbaugh, is helpful.

I think the metaphor is effective, but the trouble if you haven't already seen it done is converting the words into a recognizable and repeatable sail shape that represents 1st gear, 2nd gear, and so on.
