HT [Hurricane] quiz handed out Monday Nov 5. The numbers #1 – #4 are different positions for your boat as the hurricane passes you. In the #1 position, where you are on the right shoulder of the storm, you are farther out in front so the wind would be hitting you from the NE. To see how this works, put a cyclonic wind diagram over the storm location and see how the wind would cycle across your position as it progressed from #2 to #4. By the time it got to the #4 position it would be past you. The waves generate outward from the core in straight lines. The only change is in their direction relative to you as the storm moves and it's angle to your position changes. Another analysis of the difference between an ET and HT storm is that since an ET storm is frontal, it is not round, the isobars will be angular along the front and the wind will shift abruptly as the storm passes. Since an HT storm is round, the wind shifts will NOT be abrupt but continual as it passes. Note that the HT waves are generated at the core and that is why they radiate outward from that location.
