MST 215 SKIPPERS AND BOAT CAPTAINS:
Just thought you all ought to know that Ted found a few items on our boat that need attention - like navigation lights, corroded battery terminals, missing cotter pins on the life lines, fuel level, etc.
If you have not already done so, check your boat out. Friday will be too late.
Saul and Lou, I've asked Aventura to fuel your boats but they have not responded to me yet. You should check and take any action needed. |

FOUL WEATHER GEAR
Went down to West Marine at the DP Harbor to see about updating my jacket.
Spoke to Carol who pointed out there is still a selection of "Third Reef" waterproof coastal gear that is marked 30% off. The jacket I saw was marked 64.99, and there's 30% off that.
We may have rain this trip so if you were thinking about it, the price for the good stuff is still discounted. Take action now to make sure you get your size. |

San Clemente Island's Northwest Harbor as a trip destination:
So far, the north end of SCI will be under exclusive military use on Feb 19, according to the schedule posted on the web. That would mean we're not going there, unless the military schedule changes.
The link to the Navy's SCI main web page is below, where you'll find another link to "Schedule." You'll also find other interesting info about the island and the Navy's use of it on this web page.

Regarding Navigation training and equipment on this cruise.
This course is not a navigation course and there will be varying levels of experience among you. Obviously somebody has to navigate or you won't ever get there. You will be required to understand a minimum level of navigation, which we call coastal piloting, and this will be presented in class tonight. As a 214 student you won't need to bring charts and tools unless you want to, you plan on using them and you clear it with your skipper.
There has been some talk of what might or might not be found on board a boat you use. Navigation tools and charts would always be something you would bring yourself regardless of what might be aboard. Biggest reason is, you write on your chart and you shouldn't be writing on somebody elses chart. You bring your own tools because you never go cruising without them and they are always in your seabag.
Incidentally, I have Aventura tool kits available for $35 [tax incl.]if you want them. That's the dividers with the little wheelie thing and parallels with the fancy delux markings [that you don't really need]. |

You will all be provided with the opportunity to give ANONYMOUS feedback to the student skipper on your boat. I'll hand out forms for you to use prior to our voyage.
I very strongly encourage you to provide feedback, whether posititve or negative, on your student skipper's leadership abilties and techniques. |

The Float Plan for Feb 18 - 20 Cruise
Sat. 0900 DEP Dana Point
ARR Willow Cove 17-1900
Sun 0800 DEP Willow Cove. It will have been decided by this departure time whether to make for Cat Harbor via the East end and San Clemente Island, or whether to get there via the West end.
Mon 0800 DEP Cat Harbor for Dana Point.
1800 ARR Dana Point Harbor with the vessels already cleaned, except for deck and topsides.
Please note:
Departure time means the time when your anchor is up, secured, and we are underway for the next destination (not the time when you are waiting for the shore party to return or the bacon to finish cooking).
Schedule is subject to change depending on conditions. |
