Greetings folks, as promised I'm uploading my version of a vessel checkout checkolist in this forum. It basically has six sections that I will be assigning to various crewmembers, based on areas you communicate a preference for. Look it over and be thinking of which section you would like to perform. The checklist is in Excel format for us to use to make sure Oz is ready for sea. If you can't work with files in Excel format please let me know and I will make alternative arrangements. It has two missions: First is to make sure all vital systems and gear is aboard an functioning. Second is to assist crew that is unfamiilar with the vessel and its systems to quickly understand its capabilities and locations of equipment. For coastal cruising in protected waters within the capabilities of marine services is is a bit overkill, but as one ventures further offshore futher from support services one must exhibit a higher level of self sufficiency, and this checklist will assist you in preparing for that environment. I'd like to run through it twice. First slowly to allow you to get up to speed on systems in general and what's on Oz and how to use them specifically. I anticipate this to take some time depending on your backgrounds. Depending on your wishes we might split the crew into two teams to work in parallel, but I'll let you decide how you would like to proceed. As we discussed we will be doing the first iteration starting at 0900 Saturday 2/11 (assuming the boat isn't chartered that day) and finishing when everyone is satisfied. I'd like to do the second run through starting sometime in the afternoon on Thursday 1/16. This time we will be concentrating only on those items that may have changed since the initial checkout. I anticipate this will take in the neighborhood of 1-2 hours. Note I have a prevoius committment starting at 6:30 on that night, so I may need to leave you to your own devices after that time. The workbook has different sheets for different categories of responsibilities. The first sheet details who is responsible for which categories, but we may or may not follow this route, or maybe we will have two teams of two that do one set and then rotate to a second set, depending on everyone's preferences. Lets discuss further between now and then. You will notice that there are three columns labelled Discuss, Diagram and Log. Items with a Discuss means you will be asked to share your findings with your fellow crewmembers at the crew briefing or in any manner you find appropriate prior to that meeting. Diagram means that because Oz may not yet have an inventory/location diagram I may need to creating one from your work. I will be providing diagrams of Oz on which you are to mark the locations of the equipment indicated. I will be creating a master diagram from your work and will post it prior to departure. In certain circumstances I have asked you to use a separate diagram from the other items you are diagraming. A third column labelled Log is used on the second iteration only and means that you will be entering specific information into the deck or engine logs so we have a baseline if needed. I expect a certain level of confusion during this process both in terms of finding equipment on the boat and unfamiliarity with some of what you find and what I expect you to do. I will be on hand to assist with any quesations you may have during this process. As an aside, this checklist is an alternative to the one that Mark suggests. I've developed it over many voyages. It more in-depth and time consuming that Mark's, but can be modified to suit the risks associated with the type of voyage you are preparing for.
